Buff-banded Rail - 28/10/06

In 2006, we set up the inaugral Challenge to see if we could collectively record 250 species during the year in the club's survey area. How did we go? Extremely well considering the drought... Plenty of unusual and rare birds .... some great records from non-members too. It was a fascinating year. And a worthwhile exercise which we encourage other groups to follow. See for yourself...

Pipped by Steve Burke for a Buff-banded Rail

Postby Mick Atzeni » Tue Oct 31, 2006 11:03 am

Steve Burke emailed yesterday to say he saw a Buff-banded Rail
in the front garden of the Lindsay St Medical Centre on the 28 September 2006 across the road from Queens Park, in downtown Toowoomba.

This species can turn up in some very odd places. Some may recall the bird we had around the DPI&F Tor St complex for a couple of months, a couple of years ago. Very amusing to watch from my office window scrambling for cover everytime a car or person approached, occasionally utilising the Abelia hedge directly outside my office window.

Cheers

I'd have to agree. Up here in the South-east I've seen a handful of these birds and I'd have to say that just about every one of those has been by the roadside, even on the Warrego Highway, near the Esk turn-off. It seems that whenever there is a little rain they decided to venture out from the rank grasses there and risk life and limb.
